Stretchy Pencil Skirt Tutorial

I am in no way a great seamstress, but I do have a sewing machine and know how to sew a semi straight line. There have been a couple skirts I've been wanting but just can't seem to find what what I'm looking for. So I did some research to find a fabric store in Utah that sells apparel fabric. I found this blog and then found out it's actually a store pretty close to wear I live. So after work I headed over to Yellow Bird Fabrics . I found the 2  colors I wanted, a bright green and mustard!

The fabric is super soft and stretchy. I LOVE them! I got so much because they were slightly damaged, so the lady at the store cut around it and just let me have it. So we will see what I come up with for the scraps...

Here's what I did:

I found a skirt of mine that had a simple design to it. I measured it and wrote down all of the measurements for the hems and such...

Then I laid the skirt ontop of the fabric to cut around and get the correct shape I needed, and of course left a little extra for the seams (1/4in each side)

Now time to sew. For the mustard/gold fabric I was in a hurry so I just sewed the sides up and called it good. Because of this stretchy material, I didn't even need to add elastic or anything to the waistband.

So I measured out the bottom hem and top hem of the skirt and made sure to pin all around.

Since I have an older machine, I don't have all of the fancy seam options, so I made sure to sew it twice.

The last thing that you will want to do is Iron your seams and press them in the direction you want.
